Miért nem Kolumbuszról nevezték el Amerikát?Why isn’t America named after Columbus?
Columbus believed until his death that he had reached Asia. The continent was named by two scholars from Alsace and Lorraine who never went there – after a Florentine merchant who may not even have known about it.Kolumbus glaubte bis zu seinem Tod, er habe Asien erreicht.

A történetThe storyDie Geschichte
Négy útja során a nagy déli szárazföld partját is megjárta, de 1506-ban bekövetkezett haláláig kitartott amellett, hogy Ázsia keleti szélét érte el.In October 1492, Christopher Columbus landed on an island in the Bahamas, convinced that he was just off the coast of India. That is why the native peoples of the Americas are still called Indians, and why the Caribbean islands are known as the West Indies. On his four voyages he also sailed along the coast of the great southern landmass, yet until his death in 1506 he insisted that he had reached the eastern edge of Asia.
A firenzei Medici-család egyik ágának megbízottjaként érkezett. Hajók felszerelésével foglalkozott, a kereskedőház, amelyben dolgozott, Kolumbusz expedícióinak ellátásában is részt vett. A kilencvenes évek végén Vespucci maga is útra kelt. A pontos utak száma ma is vitatott.Meanwhile, a Florentine merchant named Amerigo Vespucci was living in Seville. He had come as an agent for a branch of the Medici family. He worked in fitting out ships, and the trading house he worked for helped to supply Columbus’s expeditions. In the late 1490s Vespucci set sail himself. He certainly took part in a Spanish expedition (1499–1500) and then a Portuguese one (1501–1502), which pushed far south along the coast of Brazil. The exact number of his voyages is still debated.
A kéziratban fennmaradt levelek hitelesebbnek tűnnek. The turning point was a letter. Around 1502–1503, a short Latin text called Mundus Novus (“New World”) appeared across Europe under Vespucci’s name. It claimed that the vast land explored in the south was not Asia but a part of the world nobody had known before. The text became a bestseller of its day, printed in many editions and several languages. Some historians believe that the printed Vespucci letters were at least partly rewritten and embellished by their publishers; the letters that survive in manuscript seem more reliable.
[Feltételezés: ez valószínű, de nem bizonyított tulajdonítás.]In 1507, a small circle of scholars in Saint-Dié in Lorraine published an introduction to geography together with a huge world map printed on 12 sheets. The map was made by Martin Waldseemüller. The accompanying text argued that Europe and Asia had both been named after women, so why not name the new part of the world after its discoverer, Americus? That is how it became America, in the feminine Latin form. Most researchers credit the name to Waldseemüller’s colleague, Matthias Ringmann.

On the map, the name appears only on South America. Waldseemüller later changed his mind and dropped the name from his later maps. But by then it was too late: the name had caught on. It was finally Gerardus Mercator’s world map of 1538 that made it standard, because it put the name “America” on both the northern and the southern continent.
A történet vége a 20. századra esett. A Waldseemüller-térkép nyomtatott példányai elvesztek. The final chapter came in the 20th century. The printed copies of Waldseemüller’s map had been lost. Some scholars believe a thousand copies were printed – ? an estimate, not a documented figure. In 1901, a Jesuit teacher, Josef Fischer, found the only known surviving copy, bound into a volume, at Wolfegg Castle in Württemberg. The US Library of Congress bought it in 2003 for 10 million dollars, and since then it has been called “America’s birth certificate”.Das letzte Kapitel spielte im 20. Jahrhundert.
There is no evidence that Vespucci pushed for the name – or even that he knew about it. He died in Seville in 1512 as chief navigator (piloto mayor) of the Spanish Crown. The accusation was spread by the Spanish friar and chronicler Bartolomé de las Casas, and in the 19th century the American writer Ralph Waldo Emerson mocked him as a thief and a pickle dealer from Seville. Vespucci’s real “crime” was simply that a text linked to his name was the first to tell a wide audience: this is a new part of the world.„Vespucci hat Kolumbus den Ruhm gestohlen.“ Es gibt keinen Beleg dafür, dass Vespucci die Namensgebung betrieben – oder auch nur davon gewusst hätte.
He was not even the first European to get there. Vikings led by Leif Erikson landed in Newfoundland, at L’Anse aux Meadows, as early as around the year 1000. A 2021 study dated wood cut with metal tools at the site to exactly 1021. And the indigenous peoples of the Americas had been living there for more than fifteen thousand years.„Kolumbus hat Amerika entdeckt.“ Nicht einmal unter den Europäern war er der Erste.
Kolumbusz nevét végül másutt őrzi az utókor: Kolumbia országnevében, az amerikai főváros Columbia körzetében (District of Columbia) és a Columbia folyó nevében.Columbus’s name lives on elsewhere: in the country of Colombia, in the District of Columbia, home of the US capital, and in the Columbia River.

The name came from a map made in Lorraine in 1507, at first only for South America; in 1538 Mercator extended it to the whole of the Americas.

Who came up with the name “America”? Most researchers think of Ringmann, but the publication does not say who proposed it; the attribution rests on indirect arguments.
Mennyire hitelesek a Vespucci-levelek? A nyomtatott változatokat a kiadók átírhatták; hogy mennyi Vespuccié és mennyi a nyomdászé, máig vita tárgya. How authentic are the Vespucci letters?
Kettő biztos (1499–1500, 1501–1502), a többi csak a vitatott levelekből ismert. How many voyages did Vespucci make? Hogyan lett a Himnuszból himnusz? How the “Hymn” became Hungary’s anthemWie der „Hymnus“ zur ungarischen Nationalhymne wurde
Ferenc Kölcsey never meant his poem to be a national anthem, Ferenc Erkel wrote the music for a competition – and it became an official national symbol only in 1989.Ferenc Kölcsey schrieb sein Gedicht nicht als Nationalhymne, Ferenc Erkel vertonte es für einen Wettbewerb – und offizielles Staatssymbol wurde es erst 1989.

A történetThe storyDie Geschichte
1823 januárjában Szatmárcsekén, egy kis falusi kúriában egy 32 éves, félszemű, betegeskedő földbirtokos letisztázott egy verset. A kézirat alján ez állt: „Cseke, január 22. 1823.” A költő Kölcsey Ferenc volt, a vers címe Hymnus, alcíme pedig a' Magyar nép zivataros századaiból.In January 1823, in a small country manor in the village of Szatmárcseke, a 32-year-old landowner – blind in one eye and often ill – made a fair copy of a poem. At the bottom of the manuscript he wrote: “Cseke, 22 January 1823.” The poet was Ferenc Kölcsey, the poem was called Hymnus, and its subtitle read: from the stormy centuries of the Hungarian people.
[Feltételezés: a régmúltba helyezés egyik célja a cenzúra elkerülése is lehetett. Ez irodalomtörténeti értelmezés, nem dokumentált szándék.]The subtitle is the key. Kölcsey wrote the poem as if it had been spoken during the Ottoman occupation or the hardships of the 17th century. It is a prayer, not a march. It is not about victory but about sin, punishment and a plea for mercy. [Assumption: setting it in the distant past may also have been a way to avoid censorship. This is an interpretation by literary historians, not a documented intention.]Dieser Untertitel ist der Schlüssel.
The poem first appeared in the 1829 volume of Aurora, a literary annual edited by Károly Kisfaludy; the volume actually came off the press at the end of 1828. At the time it was just one patriotic poem among many. Kölcsey died in 1838 and did not live to see it set to music.
A fordulat 1844-ben jött. A pesti Nemzeti Színház igazgatója, Bartay András pályázatot hirdetett a vers megzenésítésére, 20 arany díjjal. A Himnusz-pályázatra tizenhárom pályamű érkezett. A nyertes Erkel Ferenc lett, a színház karmestere, aki jeligeként Kölcsey Vanitatum vanitas című versének kezdősorait választotta: „Itt az írás, forgassátok / Érett ésszel, józanon.” A Himnusz zenéjét 1844. július 2-án mutatták be a Nemzeti Színházban. The turning point came in 1844. András Bartay, director of the National Theatre in Pest, announced a competition to set the poem to music, with a prize of 20 gold coins. A year earlier there had been a similar competition for Mihály Vörösmarty’s poem Szózat (“Appeal”), won by Béni Egressy. Thirteen entries arrived for the Hymn competition. The winner was Ferenc Erkel, the theatre’s conductor, whose motto was the opening lines of Kölcsey’s poem Vanitatum vanitas: “Here is the writing – turn its pages with a mature and sober mind.” Erkel’s Hymn was first performed at the National Theatre on 2 July 1844.Die Wende kam 1844.

Innen a nép vette át. From then on, the people took it over. It was sung on national holidays, at church services and social gatherings, more and more often as the closing piece of a celebration. No law required it, yet everyone knew it was the song of the Hungarians. Under the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy the official state anthem was the Austrian Gott erhalte, but Hungarian audiences sang their own.
In the Rákosi era (the Stalinist years around 1950) the Hymn became awkward: a song praying to God hardly suited a socialist state. From 1949, only the music was played at official events, without the words. ? Anecdote: according to tradition, Mátyás Rákosi asked the composer Zoltán Kodály and the poet Gyula Illyés to write a new anthem, but both found a way to decline. Kodály is said to have replied that Hungary already had an anthem. The story is often told, but no reliable written source for it is known.

For almost a century and a half it was one only by custom. It was written into the Constitution only by the 1989 amendment; today it is laid down in the Fundamental Law.„Der Hymnus war schon immer die offizielle Nationalhymne.“ Fast anderthalb Jahrhunderte lang war er es nur kraft Gewohnheitsrecht.
„A Magyar Kultúra Napja (január 22.) a Himnusz megjelenésének napja.” Az emléknapot 1989 óta tartják, 2023 óta állami emléknap.“Hungarian Culture Day (22 January) marks the day the Hymn was published.” It doesn’t: it is the date on the manuscript, the day the fair copy was finished. The poem was published almost six years later, in the 1829 volume of Aurora. The day has been celebrated since 1989 and has been an official state memorial day since 2023.„Der Tag der ungarischen Kultur (22.
„A Himnusz egyetlen versszakból áll.” A többi versszak a honfoglalástól a török pusztításon át a belső viszályig a nemzet egész történelmét végigjárja. Érdemes egyszer végigolvasni.“The Hymn has only one verse.” The poem has eight stanzas, but usually only the first is sung. The others travel through the nation’s whole history – from the Hungarian conquest of the Carpathian Basin through the devastation of the Ottoman wars to internal strife.

Miért sós a tenger, és miért édes a Balaton? Why is the sea salty – and Lake Balaton fresh?
Most of the salt in the sea comes from the land – from rocks. The same process that made the sea salty is slowly adding salt to Lake Balaton too. The only thing that saves the lake is that it has an outlet.

A történetThe storyDie Geschichte
1715-ben Edmond Halley, a róla elnevezett üstökös pályájának kiszámítója, érdekes ötlettel állt elő a londoni Királyi Társaság előtt. In 1715, Edmond Halley – the man who calculated the orbit of the comet that bears his name – put an intriguing idea to the Royal Society in London. He suggested measuring the salt content of lakes and seas over a long period. From the rate at which it rose, one could work out how long salt had been accumulating – and from that, the age of the Earth. The idea was simple: rivers constantly carry a little salt into the sea, the water evaporates, and the salt stays behind.1715 trug Edmond Halley – der Mann, der die Bahn des nach ihm benannten Kometen berechnete – der Royal Society in London eine verblüffende Idee vor.
A tenger tehát hatalmas lepárlóként működik: a víz körbejár, a só felhalmozódik. Ehhez járul a tenger alatti vulkánok és hőforrások járuléka. A tengervíz kloridtartalmának jó része a Föld belsejéből feltörő vulkáni gázokból származik.Halley’s basic idea was right; his conclusion was not. Here is the process as we understand it today. Rainwater is slightly acidic because of the carbon dioxide in the air, and as it seeps through rock it slowly dissolves minerals. Rivers carry these dissolved ions (electrically charged atoms and groups of atoms) to the sea. Only pure water evaporates from the sea; it falls again as rain and goes back to work on the rocks. So the sea works like a giant still: the water goes round and round, and the salt builds up. Undersea volcanoes and hot springs add their share. Much of the chloride in seawater comes from volcanic gases rising from the Earth’s interior.
The result: ocean water contains on average about 35 grams of salt per litre, most of it sodium chloride – ordinary table salt.Das Ergebnis: Meerwasser enthält im Durchschnitt etwa 35 Gramm Salz pro Liter, zum größten Teil Natriumchlorid – also Kochsalz.
A tenger tehát nemcsak gyűjti a sót, hanem válogat is.There is a twist. The main ingredients of river water are not sodium and chloride but calcium and bicarbonate. In the sea, shellfish, snails and corals take these out of the water and build them into their shells and skeletons; over time the settled remains turn into limestone. Nobody needs the sodium and chloride, though, so they stay in the water for millions of years. The sea does not just collect salt – it sorts it, too.

A Balatonba is folyamatosan érkezik oldott ásványi anyag, főleg a Zala hozza. And Lake Balaton? Dissolved minerals flow into Balaton all the time too, mostly brought by the River Zala. The difference is that Balaton has an outlet: the Sió Canal at Siófok. Where water not only evaporates but also flows away, salt does not build up – the water flushes the lake through. So Balaton stays a freshwater lake, although it contains a fairly large amount of dissolved minerals, mainly calcium and magnesium bicarbonate.
A mérleget a tóra hulló csapadék (kb. 600 mm) billenti pozitívba, a többlet a Sión távozik (kb. 470 mm). Aszályos nyarakon a Sió zsilipjét lezárják, hogy a víz a tóban maradjon. Ilyenkor a Balaton gyakorlatilag lefolyástalan tóként viselkedik, és az oldott anyag lassan sűrűsödik benne. What makes Balaton vulnerable is that it is only about 3–3.5 metres deep on average, with a surface area of about 590 km². A lake that large and that shallow loses a great deal of water to evaporation: in an average year, evaporation (a layer of about 880 mm across the whole lake) is more than the Zala and the streams bring in (about 810 mm). The balance is tipped by the rain falling on the lake itself (about 600 mm), and the surplus leaves through the Sió (about 470 mm). In dry summers the sluice on the Sió is closed to keep the water in the lake. At such times Balaton behaves almost like a lake without an outlet, and the dissolved substances slowly become more concentrated.
A lefolyástalan tavak sorsa jól ismert. A Holt-tenger vize mintegy tízszer sósabb az óceánokénál, ezért az ember elmerülés nélkül lebeg rajta. A Kaszpi-tenger és a Nagy-sóstó (Utah) is a lefolyástalanság miatt sós. Közelebbi példa a Kiskunság szikes tavai: kifolyásuk nincs, nyaranta erősen párolognak, partjukon fehér sókiválás látható.The fate of lakes without an outlet is well known. The Dead Sea is about ten times saltier than the ocean, so you float on it without sinking. The Caspian Sea and the Great Salt Lake in Utah are salty for the same reason: they have no outlet. A closer example is the soda lakes of the Kiskunság region in Hungary: they have no outflow, they evaporate heavily in summer, and white salt crusts form on their shores.
„A tenger egyre sósabb lesz.” Nem lesz, legalábbis érzékelhetően nem. A só beáramlása és kivonódása (üledékképződés, sóréteg-lerakódás, a tengerfenék kőzeteivel való csere) nagyjából egyensúlyban van, és a tengervíz sótartalma évszázmilliók óta közel állandó. Halley módszere ezért nem működhetett. Amikor John Joly ír fizikus 1899-ben elvégezte a számítást, kb. 90 millió évet kapott eredményül. A Föld valódi kora ennek ötvenszerese, kb. 4,5 milliárd év.“The sea keeps getting saltier.” It doesn’t – at least not noticeably. The inflow and removal of salt (through sediments, salt deposits and exchange with the rocks of the seabed) are roughly in balance, and the salinity of seawater has been nearly constant for hundreds of millions of years. That is why Halley’s method could not work. When the Irish physicist John Joly did the calculation in 1899, he got about 90 million years. The Earth’s real age is fifty times that: about 4.5 billion years.„Das Meer wird immer salziger.“ Wird es nicht – jedenfalls nicht merklich.
? A folyóvíz átlagos sótartalma kb. százada-háromszázada a tengerének. Az, hogy sós-e a víz, nem azon múlik, hogy érkezik-e bele só, hanem azon, hogy el is távozik-e.“If rivers bring the salt, river water must be salty too.” The salt is there, but so diluted that we cannot taste it. ? On average, river water contains roughly a hundredth to a three-hundredth as much salt as seawater. Whether a body of water is salty depends not on whether salt flows in, but on whether it can also flow out.„Wenn Flüsse das Salz bringen, muss Flusswasser auch salzig sein.“ Das Salz ist drin, aber so verdünnt, dass wir es nicht schmecken. ?

Sea salt is dissolved out of rocks, carried by rivers and left behind when the water evaporates; part of the chloride is volcanic.
A lake stays fresh because it has an outlet; lakes without one, like the Dead Sea, turn salty.
Halley wanted to use salt to calculate the age of the Earth, but it could not work, because the sea’s salinity has long been in balance.

How much less salt does river water contain than seawater? A történetThe storyDie Geschichte
In the spring of 399 BC, 500 Athenian citizens chosen by lot sat down to judge a man of seventy. The charge: Socrates did not honour the city’s gods, brought in new divine beings and corrupted the young. The accused did not deny that he was an odd character: he went barefoot, wore a shabby cloak and spent whole days in the marketplace asking people questions.
Why he did it, he explained himself in his defence speech. A friend of his, Chaerephon, once went to Delphi and asked the oracle whether anyone was wiser than Socrates. The priestess answered: no one. Socrates did not believe it and set out to prove it wrong. One by one he questioned the politicians, the poets and the craftsmen who considered themselves wise.
The result was embarrassing for everyone. It turned out that the politicians could not say what justice was, the poets could not explain their own poems, and the craftsmen assumed that because they knew their trade, they understood everything else as well. Socrates concluded that perhaps he was wiser than they were in just one respect: what he did not know, he did not think he knew. Many of the people he questioned never forgave him for showing them up in public, in front of the young.
Athénban a vádlott javasolhatott magának büntetést. At the trial he did not plead for mercy, nor did he bring his weeping children into court, as was the custom. He was found guilty by roughly 280 votes to 220. He remarked himself that if only thirty votes had gone the other way, he would have been acquitted. In Athens the accused could propose his own penalty. Socrates first suggested free meals at the city’s expense for the rest of his life, like an Olympic champion; then, at his friends’ urging, a fine. ? According to a much later source, even more jurors voted for death in the second vote than had voted him guilty in the first.

Utolsó szavai: „Kritón, egy kakassal tartozunk Aszklépiosznak.”The sentence was not carried out at once. Every year Athens sent a sacred ship to the island of Delos, and until it returned, no one could be executed. So Socrates spent about thirty days in prison. His friend Crito arranged an escape, but Socrates refused to run: he argued that he had accepted the city’s laws all his life and could not turn against them now. On the last day he drank the cup of poison. Plato calls it simply “the poison”; that it was hemlock was added by later tradition. His last words: “Crito, we owe a cock to Asclepius.”Das Urteil wurde nicht sofort vollstreckt.
Socrates himself never wrote a single line. What we know about him comes from three sources that often contradict each other: the dialogues of his student Plato, the memoirs of another student, Xenophon, and Aristophanes’ comedy The Clouds (423 BC), which portrays him as a ridiculous know-it-all with his head in the clouds.Sokrates selbst schrieb keine einzige Zeile.
A csattanós, önellentmondó változat a latin hagyományból terjedt el; ? az előzményét többnyire Cicerónál jelölik meg.“Socrates said: I know that I know nothing.” Nowhere in Plato does it appear in this form. The defence speech says only this: what he does not know, he does not think he knows. That is a much more modest claim, and not a paradox at all. In the same speech he even states that there is something he knows for certain: that doing wrong is bad and shameful. The punchy, self-contradicting version spread through the Latin tradition; ? its forerunner is usually traced to Cicero.„Sokrates sagte: Ich weiß, dass ich nichts weiß.“ In dieser Form steht der Satz nirgends bei Platon.
A per négy évvel azután zajlott, hogy Athénban megbukott a Harmincak véres uralma. E zsarnokok egyik vezére, Kritiasz, valamint Alkibiadész, aki a háborúban átállt Spártához, egykor Szókratész körébe tartozott. Politikai vádat a Kr. e. 403-as közkegyelem miatt nem lehetett emelni. [Feltételezés: sok történész szerint a vallási vád mögött ez a politikai gyanú is meghúzódott. Ez értelmezés, a vádirat nem említi.]“Socrates was condemned for thinking freely.” That is only half the story. The trial took place four years after the bloody rule of the Thirty Tyrants had collapsed in Athens. One of their leaders, Critias, and Alcibiades, who had defected to Sparta during the war, had both once belonged to Socrates’ circle. Political charges could not be brought because of the amnesty of 403 BC. [Assumption: many historians think this political suspicion also lay behind the religious charge. This is an interpretation; the indictment does not mention it.]„Sokrates wurde für freies Denken verurteilt.“ Das ist nur die halbe Geschichte.
Három mondat, ami megmaradThree sentences to rememberDrei Sätze zum Merken
What Socrates said was: what he does not know, he does not think he knows; “I know that I know nothing” is a later, Latin-born exaggeration.
In 399 BC thirty votes decided that he was found guilty; he refused to escape and drank the cup of poison.399 v.
He wrote nothing: we know him from Plato, Xenophon and a comedy by Aristophanes – three different Socrateses.

The sources still give no firm answer to these questions – and that, too, is part of the story.
Hogyan szavaztak a halálbüntetésről? How did the jurors vote on the death penalty? The figure is given only by Diogenes Laertius, more than six hundred years after the trial.
Hány esküdt ült a perben? How many jurors sat at the trial? 500 or 501: sources differ, so the vote counts can only be given in round figures.
Where does the Latin form of “I know that I know nothing” come from? Its forerunner is usually sought in Cicero, but the exact passage is not settled.
A vádirat vallási vádat emelt; a politikai háttér a történészek értelmezése.How political was the trial? The indictment made a religious charge; the political background is the historians’ interpretation.
