A világ legnagyobb inflációja: a pengő, 1946The worst inflation in history: the pengő, 1946Die schlimmste Inflation der Geschichte: der Pengő, 1946
The record is held not by Weimar Germany or Zimbabwe but by Hungary. In the summer of 1946 prices doubled roughly every 15 hours, and when the forint was introduced on 1 August, a single forint cost a four followed by 29 zeros in pengő.

A történetThe storyDie Geschichte
On 11 July 1946 the Hungarian National Bank issued a new banknote: 100 million b.-pengő. The “b.” stood for billió – a million million in Hungarian usage – so the note was worth 100 quintillion pengő, a one followed by twenty zeros. It is the highest-denomination banknote ever put into circulation anywhere in the world. The next one, for 1 milliárd b.-pengő, had already been printed, but it never went into circulation.
Yet the pengő had started out as a stable currency: introduced in 1927 to replace the crown, it was regarded as reliable money in the 1930s. The Second World War, however, destroyed a large part of the country’s factories, bridges and railways; Hungary had to pay reparations, and supplying the occupying army was another burden on the state. With hardly any tax revenue, the government covered its spending by printing money. The more money there was, the less it was worth – and the less it was worth, the more had to be printed.
1946 nyarára a folyamat elszabadult. By the summer of 1946 the process had spun out of control. At the July peak, prices doubled roughly every 15 hours. Wages were paid at ever shorter intervals, and anyone who received money spent it at once, because a few hours later it was worth only a fraction. On 1 January 1946 the government introduced the adópengő (“tax pengő”): a unit of account whose value in pengő was recalculated and announced every day. By the summer, however, the adópengő had been swallowed by inflation too.

A forint mögé aranyat is rendeltek: az amerikai hadsereg augusztus 6-án visszaszállította a Magyar Nemzeti Bank mintegy 30 tonnás aranykészletét, amelyet 1945 elején a nyilasok vittek nyugatra. A forint stabil maradt; ennek ára a szigorú költségvetés és a bérek erős visszafogása volt. The solution was an entirely new currency. On 1 August 1946 the forint was introduced: one forint was worth 4 × 10²⁹ pengő, or 200 million adópengő. Gold was put behind it as well: on 6 August the US Army returned the Hungarian National Bank’s gold reserve of about 30 tonnes, which the Arrow Cross regime had taken west in early 1945. The forint held steady; the price was a strict budget and sharply restrained wages.

A Guinness-rekordok listája is az 1946-os magyar inflációt tartja a valaha mért legnagyobbnak.“The worst inflation was in Weimar Germany or Zimbabwe.” German hyperinflation peaked in 1923 and Zimbabwe’s in 2008, but neither reached Hungary’s. Guinness World Records also lists the Hungarian inflation of 1946 as the highest ever recorded.„Die schlimmste Inflation gab es in Weimar oder in Simbabwe.“ Die deutsche Hyperinflation erreichte 1923 ihren Höhepunkt, die simbabwische 2008 – doch keine kam an die ungarische heran.
The forint was stabilised by its gold backing.” The gold arrived only on 6 August, five days after the forint was introduced. Stability came rather from strict economic policy: a balanced budget and wages and prices held down. [Assumption: the gold mainly strengthened confidence; economic historians differ on how large its role was.]„Die Golddeckung machte den Forint stabil.“ Das Gold kam erst am 6.

How much of The Stars of Eger is true?
A bikavér legendája viszont jóval későbbi.A surprising amount. István Dobó, Gergely Bornemissza and the siege of 1552 are real, and a minstrel wrote down the key details just a year later. The legend of “bull’s blood”, however, came much later.Erstaunlich viel.

A történetThe storyDie Geschichte
In the autumn of 1552 the Ottoman army marched on Eger. That year the Turks had already taken Temesvár, Szolnok and many smaller castles; Eger was the next step north. The castle was defended by Captain István Dobó with roughly two thousand people – soldiers, peasants, women and children. Sources put the Ottoman army at between 35,000 and 70,000. The siege lasted more than five weeks, and on 18 October the Turks withdrew.
None of this was invented by Gárdonyi. In 1553, a year after the siege, Sebestyén Tinódi Lantos, the most famous minstrel of the age, wrote his Song of the Siege of Eger Castle, which recorded many names and events. That song became Gárdonyi’s main source. Gergely Bornemissza was real, too: after the siege he became captain of Eger; later he was captured by the Turks and executed in Constantinople.
Gárdonyi Géza 1897-től Egerben élt, és alaposan utánajárt a történetnek. Kutatásai nyomán 280 védő nevét azonosította; ezeket 1902-ben a Budapesti Hírlap közölte. Ma a vár Hősök termében 313 név olvasható. A regény 1899-ben jelent meg. Gárdonyi sírja Egerben van, a felirata ennyi: „Csak a teste.”Géza Gárdonyi lived in Eger from 1897 and researched the story thoroughly. He identified 280 defenders by name, and the list was published in 1902 by the Budapesti Hírlap. Today 313 names can be read in the castle’s Hall of Heroes. The novel was published in 1899. Gárdonyi’s grave is in Eger; its inscription reads simply: “Only his body.”Géza Gárdonyi lebte ab 1897 in Eger und recherchierte die Geschichte gründlich.

What Gárdonyi added is the heart of the novel: Gergely Bornemissza’s childhood, his love for Éva Cecey, Jumurdzsák and the talisman. These threads are invented, but they are woven into the real events of the siege. The novel’s power lies precisely in this: invented characters living within real walls, on real days.
A mai borfajta receptjét Gröber Jenő írta le 1912-ben. ? Hogy Gárdonyi regénye mennyiben terjesztette a legendát, abban a források eltérnek.“The defenders drank wine, and the Turks thought bull’s blood gave them strength.” This is a legend. The word bikavér (“bull’s blood”) appears in the early 19th century, and it is first linked to Eger in a collection of proverbs from 1851. The recipe of today’s wine was written down by Jenő Gröber in 1912. ?
? A róluk szóló részletek egy része azonban későbbi: a nők szerepét a 19. században Horváth Mihály történész emelte ki.“The heroes of the siege were the soldiers.” The defenders also included peasants, women and children, and the courage of the women of Eger became part of Hungarian memory. ? Some of the details about them, however, are later: their role was highlighted in the 19th century by the historian Mihály Horváth.„Die Helden der Belagerung waren die Soldaten.“ Zu den Verteidigern gehörten auch Bauern, Frauen und Kinder, und der Mut der Frauen von Eger wurde Teil der ungarischen Erinnerung. ?

A történetThe storyDie Geschichte
In Transcarpathia, near Rakhiv on the banks of the Tisza, stands a stone pillar erected in 1887 by engineers of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. Locals and guidebooks know it as the centre of Europe. According to Austrian experts, however, the pillar was never meant to be that: its Latin inscription was mistranslated. It was Soviet-era propaganda that really turned it into the centre of Europe.
1775-ben Szymon Sobiekrajski lengyel csillagász a lengyel Suchowolát nevezte meg. A 20. század elején német földrajztudósok Drezda környékére tették a középpontot. It is not the only candidate. In 1775 the Polish astronomer Szymon Sobiekrajski named the Polish town of Suchowola. In the early 20th century German geographers placed the centre near Dresden. In 1989 Jean-George Affholder, a researcher at the French National Geographic Institute (IGN), calculated it to lie near the village of Bernotai in Lithuania, not far from Vilnius; a monument was erected there in 2004, and this is the point recognised by Guinness World Records. Krahule in Slovakia, near Kremnica (Körmöcbánya), also claims its own centre, as do Polotsk in Belarus, the Estonian island of Saaremaa and, in Hungary, Tállya.

A válasz azon múlik, mit tekintünk Európának. How can there be so many “middles”? The answer depends on what we count as Europe. Where do we draw the eastern border – at the Urals or elsewhere? Do the islands count: Iceland, Svalbard, the Azores? And what do we mean by the middle – the midpoint between the extreme points, or the centre of gravity of the area? Each answer gives a different point, and each can be defended. The centre even moves: when the United Kingdom left the European Union, the EU’s centre shifted too.
So the question is not really where the centre of Europe is, but whose Europe. Behind every monument lies a definition – and often the viewpoint of an era: the map of the Monarchy, a Polish astronomer’s calculation, a French institute’s rigorous method. The many middles are not mistakes, then, but different answers to the question of what Europe means.

A legtöbbet idézett modern érték a litvániai pont.“The centre of Europe is at Rakhiv.” The pillar of 1887 is the best-known candidate, but none of today’s calculations confirms it, and even its original purpose is disputed.
A matematika pontos, a kiinduló feltevések nem azok.“The centre of Europe can be calculated precisely.” Only if we first agree on Europe’s borders and on the method – and there is no generally accepted rule for either.

Ockham borotvája – és amit Ockham sosem írt leOckham’s razor – and what Ockham never wroteOckhams Rasiermesser – und was Ockham nie schrieb
One of the most quoted principles in science bears the name of a 14th-century friar – yet he did not write the famous Latin sentence, nor did he use the word “razor”. And the principle does not say what most people think it says.

A történetThe storyDie Geschichte
Ockhami Vilmos 1287 körül született egy Ockham nevű faluban, Dél-Angliában. Ferences szerzetes lett, Oxfordban tanult. A pápa kiközösítette.William of Ockham was born around 1287 in a village called Ockham in southern England. He became a Franciscan friar and studied at Oxford. In 1324, suspected of heresy, he was summoned before the Pope in Avignon, where his writings were examined for years. In 1328 he fled and lived in Munich under the protection of Emperor Louis the Bavarian until his death in 1347. The Pope excommunicated him.
One of the guiding ideas of his thinking was that explanations should not be made needlessly complicated. He put it in several places, for instance: “Numquam ponenda est pluralitas sine necessitate” – plurality must never be posited without necessity. The principle was not his invention: Aristotle had said something similar, and medieval scholars regarded it as a well-known rule. But Ockham applied it so consistently that it ended up bearing his name.
A ma ismert, csattanós latin mondat, az „Entia non sunt multiplicanda praeter necessitatem” (a dolgokat nem szabad szükségtelenül megsokszorozni) Ockham egyik fennmaradt művében sem szerepel. A hozzá legközelebb álló változatot egy ír ferences, John Punch írta le 1639-ben, közel háromszáz évvel Ockham halála után, és ő is közismert elvként idézte. A „borotva” szót Libert Froidmont németalföldi teológus használta először: „novacula Occami”, Ockham borotvája, mert az elv lenyesi a fölösleges feltevéseket. Az angol elnevezés 1852-ben bukkant fel.The punchy Latin sentence we know today, “Entia non sunt multiplicanda praeter necessitatem” (entities must not be multiplied beyond necessity), appears in none of Ockham’s surviving works. The closest version was written in 1639 by an Irish Franciscan, John Punch – almost three hundred years after Ockham’s death – and he, too, quoted it as a well-known principle. The word “razor” was first used by Libert Froidmont, a theologian from the Low Countries: “novacula Occami”, Ockham’s razor, because the principle shaves off unnecessary assumptions.

Today the razor is a basic rule of science, medicine and detective work. If two explanations account for the same facts, examine first the one that needs fewer unproven assumptions. Medical students learn it like this: when you hear hoofbeats, think of horses, not zebras.
„A legegyszerűbb magyarázat mindig a helyes.” A valóság olykor bonyolult. The simplest explanation is always right.” The razor promises not truth but an order: start the investigation with fewer assumptions. Reality is sometimes complicated. Doctors have a counter-rule, linked to the name of John Hickam: patients can have as many diseases as they please.„Die einfachste Erklärung ist immer die richtige.“ Das Rasiermesser verspricht keine Wahrheit, nur eine Reihenfolge: Man beginnt die Prüfung mit weniger Annahmen.
A gondolat egyébként jól kiegészíti a borotvát: az egyszerűségnek is van határa.“Einstein said everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler.”? This often-quoted line probably did not come from him in this form; it is a later condensation of an idea from a lecture he gave in 1933. The idea complements the razor nicely, though: simplicity has its limits too.„Einstein sagte, man solle alles so einfach wie möglich machen, aber nicht einfacher.“?
