Mióta van Budapest? How old is Budapest?Seit wann gibt es Budapest?
Európa egyik legrégebbi múltú vidékén fekszik, mégis az egyik legfiatalabb főváros: Budapest 1873. november 17-én jött létre Pest, Buda és Óbuda egyesítésével. A neve azonban régebbi, és a városok összenövését egy híd indította el.It stands on some of Europe’s oldest settled ground, yet it is one of the youngest capitals: Budapest was created on 17 November 1873 by uniting Pest, Buda and Óbuda. Its name, however, is older – and it was a bridge that set the cities growing together.

A történetThe storyDie Geschichte
A 19. század elején a Duna két partján két külön város élt: a dombos Buda a királyi várral és a hivatalokkal, és a sík, gyorsan növő kereskedőváros, Pest. Állandó híd nem kötötte össze őket. Nyaranta hajóhíd állt a folyón, télen azonban a jégzajlás miatt szétszedték, és ilyenkor napokig, olykor hetekig nem lehetett átkelni. At the start of the 19th century two separate towns stood on the two banks of the Danube: hilly Buda, with the royal castle and the government offices, and Pest, a flat, fast-growing merchant town. No permanent bridge linked them. In summer a pontoon bridge spanned the river, but in winter it was dismantled because of the drifting ice, and then there could be no crossing for days, sometimes weeks.
According to tradition, in the winter of 1820 Count István Széchenyi – the 19th-century reformer whom his rival Lajos Kossuth called “the greatest Hungarian” – could not cross in time for his father’s funeral, and vowed then to have a permanent bridge built. The Chain Bridge was built to plans by the Scottish engineer William Tierney Clark, with money from the banker György Sina, and opened on 20 November 1849. Everyone was to pay the bridge toll, which is why Count Antal Cziráky, the Lord Chief Justice, saw it as a breach of the nobility’s tax exemption and a threat to the constitution. Széchenyi could no longer take part: since 1848 he had been living in a mental asylum at Döbling near Vienna.
The name was born before the city. As early as 1831, in his book Világ (“Light”), Széchenyi wrote of “Buda-Pest” as a single capital. ? According to one source he disliked the name “Pest” too, because in German and Latin it recalls the plague. The union was finally enacted by Act XXXVI of 1872, and the first general assembly of the new capital met on 17 November 1873. So the three towns became Budapest, the second capital of the Habsburg Monarchy after Vienna.

1873-ban csak hivatalos lett.“The name Budapest was invented in 1873.” The name had been around for decades: Széchenyi wrote it with a hyphen in 1831, and more and more people used it in the following years.
„Budapest = Buda + Pest.” Három város egyesült, nem kettő: a harmadik, Óbuda, a római Aquincum helyén álló legrégebbi település volt. A névből egyszerűen kimaradt.“Budapest = Buda + Pest.” Three towns were united, not two: the third, Óbuda, standing on the site of Roman Aquincum, was the oldest of them. It simply did not make it into the name.„Budapest = Buda + Pest.“ Vereinigt wurden drei Städte, nicht zwei: Die dritte, Óbuda, auf dem Gebiet des römischen Aquincum, war die älteste.

Who first wrote “Budapest” without a hyphen? One source points to János Arany’s Toldi of 1846; we could not confirm this from another source.Wer schrieb „Budapest“ zuerst ohne Bindestrich?
Igaz-e a temetés története? Is the funeral story true? Tradition says so and links the idea of the bridge to it; we have not checked it against a contemporary source.
Mit javasolt Széchenyi a „Pest” helyett? What did Széchenyi propose instead of “Pest”? One source mentions “Honderű”; we found this in a single place only. Was schlug Széchenyi statt „Pest“ vor?

Who was the real Dracula?
Everyone knows Dracula, but few know that the man who lent him his name spent years as the prisoner of a Hungarian king. The author, meanwhile, never set foot in Transylvania – and knew surprisingly little about the historical figure.

A történetThe storyDie Geschichte
In May 1897 a novel by the Irish writer Bram Stoker was published in London: Dracula. Stoker managed a London theatre; he was no traveller. He never saw Transylvania: he gathered its landscapes, customs and superstitions from travel books in the library of the British Museum. According to his notes, he originally meant to call his vampire “Count Wampyr”.Im Mai 1897 erschien in London der Roman eines irischen Schriftstellers, Bram Stoker: Dracula.
Kegyetlen büntetései miatt kapta a „Karóbahúzó” (Țepeș) melléknevet. He found the name in an English book of 1820, an account of Wallachia and Moldavia by the diplomat William Wilkinson. A footnote said that “Dracula in the Wallachian language means devil”. Stoker hardly looked further. Behind the name, in fact, stood a 15th-century ruler: Vlad III, voivode (prince) of Wallachia, called Drăculea – “son of Dracul” – after his father, Vlad, known as “Dracul” as a member of the Order of the Dragon.
Itt jön a magyar szál. Here comes the Hungarian thread. In 1462 Vlad fled from the Turks to Transylvania and asked for help from Matthias Corvinus, King of Hungary. Matthias, however, had him arrested, and Vlad remained his prisoner for about twelve years, mostly at Visegrád, the royal castle on the Danube. He was released only around 1474–75; he briefly regained his throne, but was killed at the end of 1476 or early in 1477.Hier kommt der ungarische Faden.
A regényben is felbukkan egy magyar: Van Helsing professzor barátjára, „Arminiusra, a budapesti egyetemről” hivatkozik, aki ismeri Drakula történetét. Ez szinte biztosan Vámbéry Ármin, a híres magyar orientalista, akivel Stoker Londonban találkozott. ? A Hungarian appears in the novel, too: Professor Van Helsing refers to his friend “Arminius, of Buda-Pesth University”, who knows Dracula’s history. This is almost certainly Ármin Vámbéry, the famous Hungarian orientalist, whom Stoker met in London. ? Whether Vámbéry told him about Vlad, we do not know: researchers have found nothing about it either in Vámbéry’s writings or in Stoker’s notes on their meeting.

Most researchers think Stoker borrowed the name, not the biography. The Dracula scholar Elizabeth Miller calls the link tenuous: had Stoker known of Vlad’s notorious cruelty, why would he have left it out of the novel?„Stoker hat Graf Dracula nach Vlad dem Pfähler gestaltet.“ Die meisten Forscher meinen, Stoker habe den Namen übernommen, nicht die Lebensgeschichte.
„Vámbéry Ármin adta Stokernek a Drakula-ötletet.” Népszerű állítás, különösen Magyarországon, de bizonyíték nincs rá. Annyi biztos, hogy találkoztak, és a regényben Arminius néven hivatkozás szerepel rá; a többi feltételezés.“Ármin Vámbéry gave Stoker the idea for Dracula.” A popular claim, especially in Hungary, but there is no evidence for it. All that is certain is that they met and that the novel refers to him as Arminius; the rest is speculation.„Ármin Vámbéry gab Stoker die Idee zu Dracula.“ Eine beliebte Behauptung, besonders in Ungarn, doch Belege gibt es nicht.

Everyone knows something about vitamin C, but few know that it was first produced in quantity in a laboratory in Szeged, Hungary – from paprika. A történetThe storyDie Geschichte
For centuries scurvy was the terror of sailors: bleeding gums, falling teeth, a slow death on long voyages. In 1747 the Scottish naval surgeon James Lind showed by experiment that citrus fruit cured it. But it took almost two more centuries to find out what exactly the active substance was.
In 1928 Albert Szent-Györgyi, a Hungarian physician and biochemist, described a previously unknown substance he called hexuronic acid, and suspected it might be the elusive vitamin C. In 1931 an American researcher, Joseph Svirbely, joined him in Szeged, and in 1932 guinea-pig experiments proved that hexuronic acid was vitamin C itself. At almost the same time the American researcher Charles Glen King also announced the discovery, and a bitter dispute over priority began between the two groups.1928 beschrieb der ungarische Arzt und Biochemiker Albert Szent-Györgyi einen bis dahin unbekannten Stoff, den er Hexuronsäure nannte, und vermutete, es könne das gesuchte Vitamin C sein.
A nagy fordulatot a paprika hozta. 1932 őszén Szent-Györgyi felfedezte, hogy a szegedi paprika rendkívül gazdag C-vitaminban, és belőle nagy mennyiségben elő tudta állítani. ? Ezzel a világ kutatói végre elegendő anyaghoz jutottak. 1937-ben Szent-Györgyi orvosi-élettani Nobel-díjat kapott, a biológiai égési folyamatokkal, különösen a C-vitaminnal kapcsolatos felfedezéseiért.The breakthrough came from paprika. In the autumn of 1932 Szent-Györgyi discovered that the paprika peppers of Szeged were extremely rich in vitamin C, and he was able to extract it from them in large quantities. ? A popular story says he realised this at dinner, when his wife served him a pepper dish he disliked – so he slipped the pepper into his pocket and took it to the lab. At last researchers around the world had enough of the substance to work with. In 1937 Szent-Györgyi received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his discoveries in biological combustion processes, with special reference to vitamin C.Den Durchbruch brachte der Paprika.

„A C-vitamin megelőzi a megfázást.” A hiedelmet Linus Pauling kétszeres Nobel-díjas vegyész 1970-es könyve tette világszerte népszerűvé. ? Kivételt jelenthetnek a szélsőséges fizikai megterhelésnek kitett emberek, például maratoni futók; náluk egyes vizsgálatok jelentős védőhatást találtak.“Vitamin C prevents colds.” The belief was popularised worldwide by a 1970 book by Linus Pauling, the chemist who won two Nobel Prizes. According to a summary of the studies (a Cochrane review, 2013), however, taking it regularly does not reduce the number of colds in the general population; it only shortens them a little, by roughly 8–10 per cent. ? People under extreme physical stress, such as marathon runners, may be an exception; some studies have found a marked protective effect in them.„Vitamin C beugt Erkältungen vor.“ Weltweit populär machte den Glauben 1970 ein Buch von Linus Pauling, dem Chemiker mit zwei Nobelpreisen.
„A citrom a legjobb C-vitamin-forrás.” A paprika, a csipkebogyó vagy a fekete ribiszke ugyanannyi tömegben több C-vitamint tartalmaz, mint a citrom. A citrom hírét a tengerészek története alapozta meg, nem a laboratóriumi mérés.“Lemons are the best source of vitamin C.” Weight for weight, peppers, rose hips and blackcurrants contain more vitamin C than lemons. The lemon’s reputation was built by the sailors’ story, not by laboratory measurement.„Zitronen sind die beste Vitamin-C-Quelle.“ Bei gleichem Gewicht enthalten Paprika, Hagebutten und schwarze Johannisbeeren mehr Vitamin C als Zitronen.

Honnan jön az „OK”?Where does “OK” come from?Woher kommt „OK“?
Hungarians say “oké”, Germans “okay”, and it is understood in almost every language on earth. These two letters were born of a newspaper joke in Boston in 1839 – a deliberately misspelt abbreviation – and a presidential campaign made them a world word.

A történetThe storyDie Geschichte
A Boston Morning Post például „SP”-t írt a „small potatoes”, vagyis „jelentéktelen dolog” helyett. A legtöbb ilyen rövidítés gyorsan feledésbe merült.In the late 1830s, comic abbreviations became a fad among American journalists. Writers sprinkled their texts with initialisms for readers to decode, and the joke was often a deliberate misspelling. The Boston Morning Post, for instance, wrote “SP” for “small potatoes” – something insignificant. Most of these abbreviations were soon forgotten.
On 23 March 1839 the paper’s editor, Charles Gordon Greene, wrote “o.k.” and, in brackets, the solution: “oll korrect” – a jokingly misspelt version of “all correct”. The abbreviation stuck, but it really spread a year later, through politics.
Becenevét, az „Old Kinderhook”-ot szülővárosáról kapta, és ennek kezdőbetűi véletlenül éppen O.K. voltak. Hívei New Yorkban megalapították a Demokrata O.K. Klubot, a „Vote for OK” jelszó pedig mindenhol ott volt. Van Buren elvesztette a választást, a két betű azonban megmaradt. In 1840 President Martin Van Buren was campaigning for re-election. His nickname, “Old Kinderhook”, came from his home town – and its initials happened to be O.K. His supporters in New York founded the Democratic O.K. Club, and the slogan “Vote for OK” was everywhere. Van Buren lost the election, but the two letters stayed.1840 kämpfte Präsident Martin Van Buren um seine Wiederwahl.
Addig a legkülönfélébb magyarázatok keringtek, és néhány ma is él.For a long time nobody knew where the word came from. The mystery was solved by the American linguist Allen Walker Read: in the 1960s he went through thousands of old newspapers and published his findings in the journal American Speech in 1963–64. Until then all sorts of explanations had circulated, and some are still around.

A kampány nem megalkotta, hanem világszóvá tette.“OK comes from Old Kinderhook.” Only half true: the abbreviation existed a year before Van Buren’s campaign. The campaign did not create it – it made it a world word.„OK kommt von Old Kinderhook.“ Nur halb wahr: Das Kürzel gab es schon ein Jahr vor Van Burens Wahlkampf.
Ez kitalált anekdota: korabeli irat nem igazolja, és a legkorábbi ismert előfordulás 1839-es.“Andrew Jackson wrote it on documents because he couldn’t spell.” The story goes that during the War of 1812 he approved papers with the initials of “oll korrect”.
